THE RANGE OF BMW ELECTRIC CARS.
Uncompromising range comfort.
Freedom means unlimited mobility. Increasingly powerful, high-voltage batteries now make electric vehicles more than suitable as daily drivers for any lifestyle. And thanks to the continuously growing public charging network from BMW Charging, you’ll have access to charging points from a wide range of operators in various cities when you're on the road – and, as a driver of a BMW electric vehicle, you’ll also have exclusive access to high-power charging stations along the motorways, such as those of our partner IONITY in Europe. Discover the world of comfortable electric driving with BMW electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
ON HOLIDAY WITH YOUR BMW ELECTRIC CAR!
The holiday destination is set, the suitcases are packed, and your BMW iX is ready for action in your driveway with a 100 per cent electric range of over 600 km (measured according to the WLTP test cycle). To get the most out of your electric car right from the start, you have already prepared the interior and battery for the journey through the My BMW app* or in the vehicle menu settings. By "pre-conditioning" while still charging through your BMW Wallbox, the electricity from the household grid has already conditioned the interior climate, so the battery’s charge and the available range remain unaffected. The Predictive Driving Assistant and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant help you to optimise your travel range while driving – and even help to increase it: “Hey BMW. How can I increase my range?” In addition to environmental influences, such as the outside temperature, your personal driving style affects the efficiency of your vehicle's high-voltage battery and the available travel range. You get the most out of your battery by adopting an anticipatory and consistent driving style. If you wish, the system can automatically add suitable charging stops along the route for destinations that lie outside your vehicle’s range, and it lets you know if the charging points are available and what services they offer.
Once you have arrived at your charging stop, unlock the charging cap and charge your BMW iX easily and conveniently using the BMW Charging Card or the My BMW app*. With the latest generation of BMW electric vehicles, you can reach an 80 per cent charge – the optimal charge for the life of your battery – in around 30 minutes with an IONITY High-Power Charging point. And you will enjoy an exclusively advantageous price – because the IONITY Plus package lets you charge within the IONITY network at particularly attractive prices. Then, you’re free to continue your journey – with zero emissions.
COMMUTING WITH YOUR BMW PLUG-IN HYBRID!
On the previous evening, you connected your BMW 5 Series Sedan 530e plug-in hybrid with the BMW Wallbox to charge up and set the precise time at which you want to take off to work. Thanks to the “preconditioning” process, your domestic mains electricity is used to adjust the temperature of the interior and the battery while the vehicle is still charging from your BMW Wallbox. This means your vehicle is ideally prepared for the journey, and you have its full range at your disposal. While you are at work, you can conveniently find a public charging station in the vicinity with the digital services from BMW Charging or use the AC charging option with the BMW charging cable provided by your employer. From time to time, you can check the charging and vehicle status of your plug-in hybrid at any time via the My BMW App*. Back at home at the end of the working day, you simply reconnect your BMW 530e Sedan to the BMW Wallbox and enjoy the rest of the evening – while looking forward to that next locally emission-free trip to work.
Range indicator
HOW TO: MAXIMIZE THE RANGE OF YOUR PHEV.
Why do the ranges vary?
The respective range of an electric vehicle depends on various factors such as driving style, route conditions, vehicle equipment, weather conditions and payload.
In detail
High average speeds (highway) reduce the range most significantly, while inner-city traffic leads to a higher range due to lower speed and higher recuperation shares (in contrast to vehicles with internal combustion engines). Furthermore, the range is reduced at low temperatures due to heating, and high temperatures with strong air conditioning. Regarding the special features/equipment, the selection of larger tire combinations generally reduces the range (if the aerodynamic disadvantage is not compensated for by a more closed wheel design). The rolling resistance class of tires is also relevant for the range: e.g. the use of a winter tire reduces the range compared to a Label A summer tire.
General range specification and range values in this indicator
In the model selection, the communicated range is based on the WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light-Duty Test Procedure) cycle.
WLTP enables a calculation of the range under prescribed driving conditions. WLTP assumes a defensive driving style with a route mix of city streets, country roads and highways.
The range indicator enables you to estimate the range under your typical driving conditions. The outer circle represents the calculated range value based on linear distances (not the actual street map), while the inner circle shows the calculated value -30% to take the real-life routes into account. What are the assumptions underlying the driving style settings?
Setting a ""sporty"" driving style assumes 100% highway driving with an average speed of approximately 130 km/h and a dynamic overtaking style. The ""economical"" setting assumes defensive driving on country roads with an average speed of around 80 km/h. Settings in between produce a mixture of both."
FAQ: THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON RANGE.
What factors affect the high-voltage battery of my BMW electric car and plug-in hybrid?
One important external factor influencing the performance and capacity of a battery is the temperature. As you probably know from your mobile phone battery, the performance is restricted in cold and hot temperatures. In your vehicle, however, this temperature influence is largely minimised by means of optimised operating strategies. And did you know that the capacity also yields information on the range you may have? Apart from temperature, other influential factors are devices in use, such as the air conditioning, the load carried and your driving style.
What is the best possible way to prepare my BMW electric car and my plug-in hybrid for the next journey?
In order to get the maximum out of your vehicle from the outset, it is advisable to precondition the battery and vehicle interior. As cooling and heating require electric energy, this process should be carried out while the vehicle is still charging. To do this, simply set the desired departure time and conditioning requirements using the My BMW App* or in the menu of the vehicle itself. When the time comes to depart, the battery will then have attained the ideal operating temperature and the climate of the interior will also be at an optimum.
How does my driving style affect the range of my BMW electric car and plug-in hybrid?
As is the case for a vehicle with a conventional propulsion system, driving style also affects the range in an electric car. As a general rule, an anticipatory, relaxed and uniform style of driving optimises your range. If, for example, you reduce your speed on the motorway from 130 km/h to 110 km/h, you can noticeably increase your range. During recuperation, that means whenever you lift your foot from the accelerator pedal, kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and fed into the battery – and as a result you gain further kilometres in range.
What happens if my destination is outside of the electric range?
If your navigation destination is outside of the electric range, a charging option is automatically added to your route or alternatively you get suggestions for relevant charging stops.*
