Can a car become more efficient and more dynamic at the same time? The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is proof that this is possible. Its intelligent drive concept uses Performance Hybrid, the combination of a powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine and an electric motor: the key to significantly reducing petrol consumption and CO2 emissions and increasing driving pleasure.
"A BMW has to show what you can experience with it. You have to be able to see and feel the character. The design makes a promise that is met during driving”, says Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 utilises next-generation hybrid technology. Interaction between the ECO PRO Mode and numerous additional measures from BMW EfficientDynamics ensures maximum efficiency – without compromising on the vehicle’s dynamic driving qualities.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo engine features a lightweight design. With its TwinScroll turbocharger, it produces a mighty 250 kW (340 hp), resulting in a torque of 450 Nm and a top speed of 250 km/h. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. And that with impressively low fuel consumption and emission values, ranging from 7.0 to 6.4 l/100 km and 163 to 149 g/km CO2 (all values in accordance with EU test cycle, depending on the tyre format selected).
The second component of the performance hybrid is the 40 kW electric motor. It can drive the car fully electrically up to a maximum speed of 60 km/h. It supports the combustion power train when overtaking, on uphill gradients and in other driving situations where spontaneous acceleration is required. The electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion high-performance battery via the rear axle.
